"In December, there was a moment when I had just climbed halfway up a suspension footbridge tower to install a sensor and I thought, “How did I get here?” I was looking down at the stunning beauty of the Nicaraguan countryside at dusk, with a glass calm river, cows grazing and kids playing. Behind me was a footbridge that, when the river flooded, connected the residents of Rio Abajo to schools, markets, and a health clinic. Somehow my graduate student work at Notre Dame had provided me with this crazy cool job of studying the effects of wind on this footbridge. "
